I’d give this book 6 stars if possible as it comes at just the right moment. The background material was quite nice. Get to Know Us. Von Eichendorff was a romantic poet and it shows in this picaresque novel.

A very unlikeable main character, in my opinion, who has all the luck in the world and even gets his happy ending. However, this Perdigkorno character is so frecking irresponsible in his whole being.

There’s also no clear antagonist beyond our hero’s general confusion and wanderlust to propel the story to its end. Well, I recommend that this Spring, whoever is reading this take the time to read Eichendorff’s Life of a Good-for-Nothing. I’m probably wrong, but I got the feeling that Eichendorff was trying to portray how a young man or teenager sees, and interacts with the world; with optimism, an open mind and enjoyment; or maybe he was showing how we should try to experience life.

We’ve got a main character, who starts out as someone who refuses to work and does nothing all day, until perdifiorno father sends him away from home because he can no longer afford to feed the guy if he doesn’t work.

It’s simply not poignant enough to be a satire, and the ending seems to suggest that we are – in good earnest – supposed to feel elated and glad that the protagonist got his happy ending.

Yet at the same time, he charms folks and has truly deep insights into beauty, decency and following his own ideals. Now when I had to read Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts for a university course on German Romanticism in at the age of twentyI indeed absolutely adored and loved this novella, and yes, even now as an older adult, Vitq still do very much appreciate Joseph von Eichendorff’s lyricism and poetical descriptions not to mention that many of the included “songs” are jn always will be personal favourites of mine.

This is a story of a young man that has to leave home to find his place in the sun. It has the emotional depth of a puddle and it largely just a trivial romp, although Eichendorff does have a wry turn of phrase from time to time. Da werde selbst ich neidisch! Transferring to Heidelberg two years later, he eventually found his way to Berlin and Vienna.

I think that maybe he did not want people to identify theirselves with the protagonist but maybe he considered himself as a good-for-nothing. The ever changing circumstances of his life on perdiggiorno road reduce him to misery, yet good luck is never far behind. Es ist eine Ballade von Gottfried Keller.

Sorry Eichendorff – I can appreciate your romantic poetry and I realize that you make great use of lyrical language in this story about a Good-for-nothing, but it just didn’t work for me.
