I admired that he couldn’t take a mistress, despite trying. She is one of those people who are openly and unabashedly selfish and curistmas top on that firmly convinced they know what is best for everyone else. To round out a wonderfully busy and well-delivered plot, Jemma’s likely paramour, the duke of Villiers, has developed an unlikely affection for the plain, brash christmaw Miss Charlotte Tatlock, rumored to be another duke’s mistress.
I think what really sold me on this was the wit. And Poppy is obviously befofe naive and very influenced by her mother.
It is never easy to get out from under the influence of a dominating personality and I thought the conflict was realistically portrayed but I am really not sure why Fletch just didn’t have Poppy’s mother’s bags packed up and her escorted out of his house.

She’s incredibly naive and childish. Because if I’d really felt you, if I’d really known chhristmas, it would have been different. I was completely engrossed in Fletcher’s determination to win back the woman he loved. In England, men looked at women as vessels in which to plunge and buck.
On one hand, the story about our main heroes, Poppy and Fletcher doesn’t deserve more than 2 stars, but on the other hand all the subplots and secondary characters in this book were wonderful. How it could be done so well in such a short amount of time speaks ill of the ton, doesn’t it? In an era where marriages are arranged, women are thought of as nothing more than their husbands arm candy and having a brain and using it is frowned upon, a woman has few choices when it comes to conducting her life.
He certainly heard her abuse against Poppy and everyone else. I should have read this series in order!!! Yet it came to nothing. We spend the lazy summer months with his mother and sister in Italy. I really loved how realistic the main story felt for the time period.
As previously mentioned, why didn’t she visit poor Villiers in his sick bed? Instead, we’re told that aftair growing into her own and my response to that is annoyance. I am sure you know someone like her. Please do not read about The Inside Take if you’re wary of knowing who is paired with whom! Poppy’s just the kind of heroine I can’t stand: I’ve adapted a rule about giving up on books if they don’t capture my attention, but somehow, I didn’t give up on this one.
He was the main reason for me not giving up the book. When his voice deepened like that, Poppy wanted to do anything he wished, though of course she would never have told him so. You will be a duchess. I really like Duchess by Nightso this book is not a reflection of the quality of the rest of the series.

To all of the ton, Poppy and Fletch are the perfect match, but after the vows are exchanged and the relationship is taken behind closed doors, their romance has fizzled out completely. As in her other novels, Eloisa James takes on the point-of-view of quite a number of characters, major and minor.

Both Poppy and Fletch are very young, and they act young. Fletch has no idea how to entice his wife Poppy behind closed doors and after four years of a cold response, he begins to drift away and give up on his marriage.
As with the first book, the book is also diminished by the focus being spread out across too many other stories. This woman is pure evil the only parent that is worse is Meredith’s dad janes. In order to christas a duke, one must allow certain indignities.
